The Pomodoro Technique

An excellent process for helping you manage your time.

I recently came across a process that helps me focus more effectively and manage my time. I've found it especially useful when working to complete a task or set of related tasks. It's called the Pomodoro Technique and was created in 1992 by an Italian called Francesco Cirillo.

It's a technique that can be used by individuals and teams to manage time and tasks. While Francesco recommends using a mechanical timer (pomodoro is the Italian word for tomato, and the technique was so named because Francesco used a tomato-shaped kitchen timer when he was developing his process), there are several computer timers that work with Pomodoro. I'm using a Mac application (simply called Pomodoro) created by Ugo Landini. It sits in the Mac's status bar (at the top of the screen) and counts down in 25-minute segments, per the technique.

Among the resources available on Francesco's Web site are the Pomodoro Technique book (downloadable in PDF format) as well as the work sheets that form part of the technique.

If, like me, you can find it difficult to focus on completing a task (with distractions like incoming emails, tweets and FaceBook updates, it's a wonder we get anything done!), then give the Pomodoro Technique a try - it's well worth the effort.
